Du Barry, also known as Madame Du Barry, was a prominent figure in French history during the 18th century. She was the last mistress of King Louis XV of France and held considerable influence at the royal court.
Before becoming the king's mistress, Du Barry was born as Jeanne Bécu in 1743 in France. She worked in a brothel and later in various roles, eventually catching the eye of the king.
With her charm and wit, Du Barry quickly rose in status at court, becoming a lady-in-waiting to the queen. Despite facing opposition from the nobility due to her common background, she used her influence to secure political appointments and rewards for her allies.
Relationship with Louis XV
Du Barry became Louis XV's official mistress in 1769 after the death of his previous mistress, Madame de Pompadour. As the king's favorite, she held great sway over him and was known for her extravagant spending and luxurious lifestyle.
Downfall and Execution
However, Madame Du Barry's fortunes took a turn for the worse with the death of Louis XV in 1774. She was banished from court by the new queen, Marie Antoinette, and eventually arrested during the French Revolution.
In 1793, Du Barry was executed by guillotine during the Reign of Terror. Her life and tragic end serve as a cautionary tale of the rise and fall of those who wield power and influence in the turbulent times of history.
