Frances Burney, later known as Mrs. Piozzi, was an English diarist, letter writer, and novelist. She gained fame primarily for her candid and insightful observations of 18th-century British society.

Early Life

Frances Burney was born on June 13, 1752, in King's Lynn, Norfolk, England. She was the third of six children of Dr. Charles Burney, a music historian, and Elizabeth Allen Burney. Frances showed literary talent from an early age and began writing at a young age.

Career

Frances Burney's literary career took off with the publication of her first novel, "Evelina," in 1778. The novel was a huge success and brought her critical acclaim. She followed up with several other novels, including "Cecilia" and "Camilla."

Marriage and Later Life

In 1784, Frances married an Italian musician named Gabriel Piozzi. This marriage caused a scandal as Gabriel was much younger than Frances. Despite the controversy, the couple lived happily together until Gabriel's death in 1809.

Happiness returned to Frances's life when she reconnected with her childhood friend, James Boswell. The two maintained a close friendship until her death.
